“Let us Celebrate the Past and Provide Hope for the Future.”

As America celebrates its 250th Anniversary, I find myself reflecting on my own journey over the past seventy-six years.  Like our nation itself, my life has been shaped by moments of triumph and tragedy, periods of uncertainty and hope, and an enduring belief that our future is determined not by circumstance alone, but by the choices we make and the people we choose to serve.

My story spans the latter half of the twentieth century and the first quarter of the twenty-first, a remarkable period in our nation’s history.  I came of age during the tumultuous 1960’s, a decade marked by the Vietnam War, the Civil Rights Movement, and the assassinations of three beloved national leaders.  Those events left a profound impression on my generation and helped shape our understanding of citizenship, sacrifice, and the responsibilities we share as Americans.

Just as those historic events influenced my generation, the COVID-19 pandemic  will undoubtedly leave a lasting impact on those who lived through it.  Every generation experiences defining moments that test its resilience and character.  How we respond to those challenges often determines the course of our lives and the future of our communities.

As I look back from America’s Bicentennial celebration in 1976 to this historic 250th anniversary, I am reminded of the many experiences, opportunities, and challenges that have shaped my life and our nation.

If we are, as individuals, the sum of our experiences, then perhaps the same can be said of our country.  To understand who we are today, we must take an honest look at our past, learn from our history, and work together to build a better future.

We live in a challenging and consequential time.  The freedoms and opportunities that many of us have enjoyed cannot be taken for granted.  Future generations will inherit the consequences of the choices we make today.  My hope is that they will learn from history, appreciate the sacrifices of those who came before them, and recognize their own ability, and responsibility, to shape a brighter future.

As America celebrates its 250th birthday, I celebrate something equally meaningful: a life dedicated to family, education, friendship, and service.  If my years on earth have taught me anything, it is that each of us has the power to make a difference in the lives of others.  In the end, that may be the greatest legacy any of us can leave behind.

As we commemorate this historic milestone in our nation’s story, let us renew our commitment to one another, to our communities, and to the ideals that have guided our country for 250 years.  The future is not something that simply happens to us, it is something we create together.

Happy 250th Birthday America!
