The Blue Envelope Program helps foster safe, respectful interactions between law enforcement officers and individuals who may have autism or other cognitive or communication differences. The program assists officers in recognizing and understanding a person’s specific needs during police encounters. While primarily intended for traffic stops, the envelope may be used during any interaction with a Darien police officer.

Participation is voluntary and free. No registration or proof of diagnosis is required. Anyone who lives, works, or frequently spends time in Darien is eligible to participate.

Blue envelopes are available for pickup at the Darien Police Department and Darien City Hall.

Participants may use the envelope to store copies of important documents such as:

  • Driver’s license or state ID
  • Vehicle registration
  • Proof of insurance

Please note:

  • The Blue Envelope does not exempt participants from law enforcement procedures or safety protocols.
  • The program is specific to Darien, and officers in other jurisdictions may not recognize it.

If you have questions pertaining to the program, please contact Police Social Worker Sabrina Shirley at 630-222-9662 or sshirley@darienil.gov
