The City of Darien is a predominantly residential community with a well-planned mix of commercial and office areas. While relatively close to Chicago (17 miles to the Loop), it offers an upscale, suburban environment with a variety of living, working, shopping and entertainment opportunities.

Darien is conveniently located in Chicago’s western suburbs. Only a 30 minute drive from Chicago, I-55 and I-355 allow easy access too many of the areas attractions. Darien is also located between two international airports, O’Hare and Midway, and Metra Chicagoland, the commuter rail service, is near Darien.

Nearby suburban attractions include Oak Brook, Yorktown, Fox Valley and the Promenade Malls, Waterfall Glen Forest Preserve, and a wide variety of restaurants and shops. Other nearby attractions include the Brookfield Zoo and Morton Arboretum.

These businesses offer support and convenience for our residents and add revenues to the city.

The City of Darien can offer a number of attractive incentives that help create healthy businesses. Darien is a home rule unit of government and has a great deal of flexibility in creating economic development financial incentives. Darien can offer sales tax abatements, low cost financing programs, business/zoning variances, and other economic development incentives. Darien has encouraged development and expansion of the business community and is committed to a vibrant economic environment that fosters business growth.

  • Serving as a conduit between the commercial economic interests in Darien, including property managers, local business managers, government agencies, and national corporate leaders
  • Encouraging the economic well-being, retention, and expansion of the existing commercial businesses located within Darien;
  • Engaging community residents to participate in the process of attracting, developing and supporting business in Darien;
  • Supporting the local Chamber of Commerce to facilitate communication and cooperation for local businesses;
  • Responsibly assisting in developing properties within the City of Darien in an effort to both improve the aesthetics of the City and provide additional revenue; and,
  • Properly reviewing City ordinances, policies, and practices to determine their impact on existing and proposed commercial businesses.
