ISSUE STATEMENT
The
City Council is requested to approve an ordinance that establishes a temporary
alternative hiring process for police officers.
In light of the current economic conditions
in the area, staff has observed that several municipalities are laying-off
employees, including police officers.
These officers represent a labor pool that the City may wish to draw
from. This ordinance suggests a
procedure for hiring laid off police officers and authorizes the Police
Commission to develop that procedure.
STAFF/COMMITTEE
RECOMMENDATION
At
the direction of the City Administrator, the City Attorney has prepared the attached
ordinance authorizing a temporary alternative process for hiring full time
police officers. The Police Committee
reviewed this ordinance and unanimously approved it at their February 1, 2010
meeting.
ALTERNATE CONSIDERATION
Not
approving the ordinance would be an alternate consideration.

ordinance will be placed on the February 16, 2010, City Council Agenda.
