Darien Receives Lowest Electric Rates in Illinois

Darien voters authorized the City to negotiate electric supply rates on the behalf of residents.  We are proud to announce our recent bid provides for the lowest rates in the State of Illinois, at 4.54 per kWh for two years, when compared with the current ComEd rate of 7.73 per kWh.  These savings would save the average resident approximately $250 per year, even as the ComEd rate drops to around 7.00 per kWh in June.  Residents will be receiving notices in the mail over the next month allowing them to opt-out of the program if they so choose.

Refuse Sticker Price Increase

Per the city’s contract with Veolia, the price of garbage/yard waste stickers increased on April 1 to $3.03. There will be no change in the appearance or color of the stickers. Stickers purchased before April 1 will still be accepted on garbage/yard waste.

Monthly Electronics Recycling

Downers Grove Township Highway Department will host electronic recycling on the third Saturday of every month (excluding holiday weekends) from 8:00am to Noon at the highway garage, 318 East Quincy Street in Westmont.  The next event will be on April 21st.  For more information please call 630-719-6625 or visit their website.

ComEd’s Outage Alerts Program!

ComEd’s Outage Alerts program allows participants to report outages via text messaging. Subscribers can simply text the word “OUT” to 26633 (COMED) to report an outage at the location ComEd has associated with their cell phone number and they receive regular updates on the status of their outage until service is restored.  Non-subscribers who text “OUT” to 26633 will be invited to subscribe to the Outage Alerts program.  New subscribers will receive a confirmation text-message that they successfully subscribed, and will immediately be enrolled to receive notifications on their cell phones or pagers when an outage has been reported at their address.

To subscribe, customers will need either the ComEd account number, the account holder's social security number or the primary phone number on the account.  Customers can also now enroll in the text message program thru the VRU using their account number, SSN or phone number.

Please note that ComEd does not charge customers for this notification, but their wireless carrier may have message and data fees.  To learn more about Outage Alerts, visit ComEd.com/text

Summer Safety Tips from the Darien Police Department

As the weather is turning nice and the children are outside playing the Darien Police Department would like to take this opportunity to remind our citizens of these safety tips:

Kids:

·         Don’t approach a stranger for any reason

·         Call 9-1-1 immediately to report the incident

·         Try and remember the license plate number of any car that approaches you, but don’t put yourself in harm’s way to do it!

·         Use your cell phone to take a picture of the car / person if you can

·         Always tell your parent / guardian if a stranger approaches you

·         Always cross the street at a corner, drivers expect to see you there, not in the middle of the street

Adults:

·         Be aware of Children playing; please obey the Neighborhood Speed Limit of 25 MPH!

·         Make sure that you close and lock all doors when you are leaving your home.

·         Do NOT leave iPods, GPS Units, Cell Phones, other electronics, or their cradles in view in your vehicle; they are very tempting for thieves.

·         Make sure that you carry your cell phone with you at all times when out in your neighborhood, you never know when you will need to call 9-1-1

·         If you call 9-1-1 from your cell phone make sure that you know exactly where you are, as your call will be routed to the a sheriff’s office dispatch and not directly to the Darien Police.

Emerald Ask Borer Treatment – Resident Information

The Home Depot also carries an application, Bayer Advanced, that may be applied by homeowners.

PLEASE NOTE THAT ANY TREATMENT PROVIDES A LIMITED GUARANTEE ON THE MORTALITY OF THE ASH TREE.
