Police Officer Impersonation
The Darien Police Department has been made aware of an incident
in Woodridge where a male subject was impersonating a police
officer. The subject was identified as a tall, black male
wearing all black, who identified himself by saying he was the
police and showing a badge and handcuffs. The subject then
frisked the victim taking the wallet and removing a debit card
and fleeing the area on foot. Although, the Darien Police
Department has not received any reports of this occurring in
Darien we would like to offer the following tips to prevent you
from becoming a victim.
If you are concerned that the person you are speaking to, who
has identified themselves as a police officer, is not, you have
the right to ask to see further identification. If you are
still not satisfied you can call 9-1-1 and ask them to verify
that an officer is at your location.
You should not allow anyone into your home if you are
questioning who they are. If there are any questions in
regards to this please call 9-1-1 immediately. For any
other questions please call the Darien Police Department at
630-971-3999.
Free Christmas Tree
Pickup
The City of Darien has partnered with Veolia Environmental to
provide free Christmas tree pick-up again this year. On the
weeks of January 9th and January 16th, Veolia
Environmental will collect Christmas trees left in the parkway
on your normal garbage day. For the trees to be picked up, they
must be free of all ornamentation, including garland, lights,
and tinsel. If the tree is bagged, it will need a sticker to be
picked up. If you have any questions regarding this program,
call 630-852-5000.

Chicago
Water Rate Increase
On January 1st, the City of Chicago and the DuPage Water
Commission are increasing the amount the City of Darien is
charged for water we receive from Lake Michigan by 34% This is
only the first year of four annual increases through 2015.
Some communities will be increasing their water rate on January
1st to make up the difference for the higher cost of water.
The City of Darien will maintain water rates at their current
level temporarily following January 1st. During the next
budget cycle the City of Darien will implement new rates that
will take these increases into consideration. The next
budget year begins on May 1, 2012 and will take these current
and projected future increases into consideration. If you
would like more information please call Scott Coren at (630)
353-8104.
Electric Supply
Referendum
The Darien City Council will be voting on placing a referendum
on the March 20, 2012 ballot at the December 19, 2011 City
Council meeting. The referendum question asks if residents
would allow the City of Darien to negotiate for the electric
supply for residential and small business accounts. Under
this arrangement, nothing would change with your service from
ComEd. ComEd would continue to respond in the exact same
fashion for outages and would continue to bill in the same
manner. The only change would be in the supply charge on
your bill, which could be lower. Some communities already
doing this are saving over 25% on their supply charges.
Residents that did not want to participate could also opt out of
this program. If you have any questions, please call Scott
Coren at (630) 353-8104.

New Illinois Law
Requires Seat Belts for All Passengers
On Jan. 1, 2012, a new Illinois law goes into effect that will
require backseat passengers to buckle up. Previously, Illinois
law required only drivers, front seat passengers and certain
passengers younger than 19 years old to wear seat belts. The new
law states that every driver and passenger of a motor vehicle
operated on a street or highway must wear a properly adjusted
safety belt, with few exceptions.
The law, HB 219, exempts passengers of emergency vehicles and
taxi cabs. The law does not apply to motorcycles, motor vehicles
that are not required to be equipped with safety belts by
federal law, or motor vehicles with a model year prior to 1965.
The full text of the law is available on the
Illinois General
Assembly’s website.
New Illinois Law
Bans Electronics from Your Trash
Starting Jan. 1, 2012, Illinois law will make it illegal for you
to throw your electronics in the garbage. This law seeks to
prevent dangerous substances contained in electronics from
infiltrating our water supply and soil when they end up in
landfills. For places you may recycle electronics in
DuPage county please visit
their website.
